Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge took place at Ardennes Forest on the German/Belgium border, from the 16th of December 1944 to 24th of January 1945. Between the German army, Britain, Frances, and U.S.A. Germans tried to reach the North Sea and capture four of the allies’ army’s and force them into a treaty that would favor the axis powers. The Battle of the Bulge was the worst battle for casualties on the American side. The Americans out numbered the Germans 29 to 31 in army divisions. The 106th Infantry Division was credited for holding the line against the German army the longest. The Germans used and lost valuable time, material, machinery and men in the offensive called Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein. When translated as “Guard on the Rhine”. When the battle was done over a million men were lost, mostly on the German side. Tanks were lost on both sides, along with the Germans losing a lot of aircrafts. The weather was the worst it had been during the war, which affected both sides. They both had frostbite and deaths from the cold and snow, which did not help them, keep strong units.

The Americans didn’t have a solid line of defense and really was not prepared for an all out offensive from the Germans. Two of the battalions were surrounded and looking for reinforcements. The 424th regiment regrouped with other regiments and went back into the fight. The Malmedy massacre where 86 American soldiers were murdered was the worst atrocity committed against American soldiers during WWII. Most casualties occurred during the first three days of the battle, when two of the three allied n regiments were forced to surrender. The American Staff Commander did not think that the Ardennes was going to be a place where the Germans were going to go for an offensive attack and that is why the Americans were very thin of men and equipment. Even though the Americans were not prepared they held their ground until reinforcements joined them. This put the Germans way out of reach of their goal and brought a quicker end to the war.

Battle of the Bulge edited by Bobby Troudt

The Battle of the Bulge was fought in the winter months of 1944 and 1945. The Battle of the Bulge was the Nazi’s last attempt to break up the allies in World War Two. Adolf Hitler was convinced that alliance between Britain, France, and America wasn’t strong and a major attack would break up the alliance. In Hitler’s mind this attack would disable or heavily damage the other countries armies. The Battle of the Bulge was the largest battle America fought in World War Two. America had 600,000 soldiers involved and nearly 81,000 died. 100,000 German soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured. The battle involved tanks and aircraft. The Germans started out strong, but ended weakly. The main problem for Germany was that they started to run out of supplies. At one point the Germans were so low on fuel that they had to abandon their vehicles. Germany lost the battle.
